The Story of the Music Video

1975 — 1979

The Birth

The Birth

The music video found its first breath. Queen's “Bohemian Rhapsody” (1975) broke the mold. Devo's “The Day My Baby Gave Me a Surprize” (1979) brought art-school weirdness. The Buggles warned us: “Video Killed the Radio Star” (1979) — and they were right.

1981

The Explosion

The Explosion

MTV launched on August 1, 1981. The first words: “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” Suddenly, music had pictures. Michael Jackson's “Thriller” (1983) became a global event. Duran Duran turned videos into mini-movies. Madonna became an icon frame by frame.

40 Years of Dominance

40 Years of Dominance

From MTV to YouTube to TikTok, the music video has remained the dominant format for global culture for four decades. The directors, the fashion, the choreography, the effects — everything you see today was built on the foundation laid from 1981 to 1984.

The 24-Hour Rotation

Four programming blocks. No ads, no game shows, no filler. Just the videos — hand-picked from a decade that took the form seriously.

1977 — 1980

New Wave Dawn

Before the cable boom — the artists who picked up cameras first and turned three minutes of song into three minutes of cinema.

1981 — 1982

Synth & New Romantic

Eyeliner, drum machines, and rented yachts. The first generation of artists who wrote songs with the video already in mind.

1983 — 1985

The Golden Reel

The peak. Directors, choreographers, and art departments arrive. Every frame is composed. Every artist is a brand.

1986 — 1989

Art Direction Era

Rotoscoping, claymation, dream-logic edits. The video becomes a stand-alone artwork — credited, awarded, archived.
